It is with the heaviest of hearts we write this post. It has taken a few days to muster the words and celebrate the life of a true legend and friend of Romford and Gidea Park RFC.
Sometimes someone connects with your life in a way that you feel respected loved and valued. Jay had the ability to give reassurance just by being there. He always had time, never a dull chat, with a capacity to light the room with laughter. A larger than life, hard as nails, loveable man who enjoyed the fun concept of Rugby comeraderie, embracing the Social side like a big child and equally the competitive side like a ferocious competitor.
Jay arrived at RGP as a teen...a gifted boy who had an appetite for powerful and destructive plays. Naturally strong and big, with a surprising turn of pace, nibble footwork and ball skills most backs would dream of. Ever present through youth rugby through to Colts...it was during this time that he caught the eye of Head Coach Vic Clay. An emerging young powerful prop and was making a strong push towards senior playing. Jay was invited play for the 1st Team, at the Brentwood Silverball. He had landed and there was no one to stop him, heads were turned and opposition bodies tumbled like bowling pins. Nothing was more spectacular than a rampaging Jay carrying, leaving people in his wake.
With a talent to inflict the biggest impact to a game. Soon came a nickname to match ‘Mungo'. Like most rugby nicknames they stay with you for life, fast overtaking your real name...he owned it. And people never forgot it.
Without a doubt he could've made a career of Rugby but that wasn't his only love, Fishing was his passion where the man of the egg chasing destruction game could find his Zen. Jay stayed a close friend to the rugby club playing vets and attending tours, where the chaos that reigned throughout he loved, able to relax in his way, equally at home. Twickle toes dancing on the dance floor and showing his drink prowess to all that challenged him.
