Mitch Smith left Romford last year to start his coaching journey with Mavericks but has since made the switch back to the club and will work as the backs coach this season. Mitch has played at some of the highest levels back in South Africa and come through their excellent schools programme with Glenwood High School. Mitch had a very good spell at Romford helping us to promotion and the Essex County Cup as well as representing Essex Men’s senior side in the County Championships. we caught up with Mitch this week
"I decided to return back to Romford as I retired from playing , I felt I wanted to give back to a club that i spent nearly 5 seasons playing for and made some great friends.
Playing history

Aims for the season , is help the boys develop and get promoted this season as I feel the definitely are in a great position with the players the have and coaching staff.
Mitch brings a wealth of experience with him - head coach Jordan Wigham had this to say – “It’s great to have Mitch on board. He brings with him a wealth of experience and meets the ambition of what the club wants to achieve moving forwards .
James Webster joined at the back end of last season but has made his role a permanent one and will be the defence and lineout coach. James joins the club having played for Westcliff and was part of the successful team whom gained promotion to Nation 2. He has also represented Essex as senior player and Essex University.
we caught up with James to have a quick chat with him - in amongst him and his wife having a boy last week
“I joined Romford from Westcliff because head coach Jordan Wigham offered me an opportunity to become a player coach, something I have wanted to do for a while, my aim after all my playing days are gone is to coach rugby fully. Romford seems to fit with my current life and offers me room to grow both as a player and as a coach. My aim for this year is promotion, to help the team develop and create a enjoyable environment.”
Head coach Jordan Wigham had this to say
“I met James a few years back while coaching with the Essex Men’s senior side where James was playing, we got on really well very quickly and his attitude, understanding of the game and attention to detail are fantastic. We had the opportunity at the end of the season to get James on board and he has decided to make this a permanent move. James has been a big hit with the other players and has already started by running some Strength and Conditioning sessions for the boys and these have been very well received.
