Romford welcomed Epping Upper Clapton for their first home game this season. This was both teams’ second league game and both hungry for a win.

Romford kicked off to Epping and went on pursuit with very attacking play. The forwards working very hard with David Baker ripping the ball to turn it over, this was then passed through hands to Oscar Brigden who in his trademark style ran to the try line to score in the first three minutes of the game. This was successfully converted by Connor Flower.

As the game continued Epping were starting to get into their stride and came back with attacking play. Both teams were moving the ball up and down the pitch with turnovers and handling errors occurring. A scrum was awarded to Romford and with a strong push the ball was hooked into Freddie Tarling’s hands who made a quick run to the try line to place the ball down between the sticks, successfully converted by Connor F.

As the game opened up, both teams were attacking and defending with gusto. A scrum was awarded to Romford and with the ball out was passed through hands to Oscar B who started to make his usual run up the wing to be met by Epping’s defence who managed to push him into touch.

Epping continued with their attacking play and managed to keep the ball in Romford’s half testing their defence. Following a penalty awarded to Romford they moved the ball quickly down the pitch to eventually land with Oscar B who scored his second try of the game. Unfortunately this was not converted.

Epping continued to attack and following winning Romford’s scrum moved very quickly to the 5 metre line where Romford worked hard to defend. The ball was turned over back into Romford hands and the game continued like this until the half time whistle was blown with a score of 19-0 to Romford.

With changes made to the Romford team at half time, the second half started in the same attacking style. Soon Epping got the ball and worked hard to move this to the 5 metre line but this was stolen by Zeesham Ali who ran half way up the pitch to be met by two defenders who bought him to the ground.

Following good work by Romford they won an Epping scrum, this was soon turned into a foot race with Daniel Francis passing to Conor O’Brien passing to the even fast Oscar who placed the ball between the sticks to achieve a hat trick. Oscar converted his try.

Some excellent attacking play followed by Romford with Daniel making it to the try line but unfortunately was tackled being brought down to lose the ball. Epping were awarded the scrum but with turnover ball and good quick play by Romford ended up in Oscar’s hands again. His dash to the try line was in vain as the try was disallowed due to a forward pass.

With Epping gaining another scrum they were determined to make their mark on the match and with some quick decision making and excellent play found themselves dodging Romford’s defence to arrive at the try line to score points on the board, which was duly converted.

Romford came back stronger and took the game into Epping’s half making several attempts at the line, when they eventually took the ball over it was held up!

The game continued with good attacking play from both teams, then Connor O’Brien turned over the ball to dash to the try line making his mark on the Score. However this was not converted.

With a few handling errors on Romford part Epping won their scrum and with quick fast play and a very strong run took Romford by surprise to score another try. Within a short time Epping replicated this to score another try with a successful conversion. Epping were definitely back in the game. Play continued by both teams in attacking style until the full time whistle was blown. A win to Romford 31-19.

Thank you to Epping for a great game of Rugby.
