The first win of the season

It was beautiful bright Sunday and the U15s made the short journey to Ongar Rugby Club. Romford were determined to do well and put behind them the first few results of the season and they certainly did just that! They raced out of the blocks and piled the pressure on Ongar – in fact most of the first half was spent in Ongar’s 22. The continual pressure finally told when Michael Courtney burst through the Ongar defence to touch down next to the posts, a try that Sam Slatford duly converted. Ongar were holding firm though and the try gave them some momentum but Romford were strong in the ruck and even stronger in the scrum and Ongar couldn't get a hold of the game.

In the second half Ongar started strongly, they had regrouped at half time but Romford were still working together well and eventually some great linking play between Luke Metcalf and Torez Polius broke Ongar’s defensve line allowing Torez to touch down for Romford’s second try. This galvanized Ongar who managed to gain some possession and finally break the U15 defence and score a converted try from a penalty. However the best was yet to come. With eight minutes to play Romford were determined not to let this game slip away from them and in the dying moments of the game they scored a fabulous team try by winning another ruck and with the ball passing from player to player, and travelling almost the full width of the pitch, Ryan Page was able to touch down and score Romford’s third try of the game. On the whistle Sam Slatford converted and the win was confirmed. A fabulous team effort from everyone and an exciting game to watch – well done boys!
