Romford U15s vs. Basildon U15s

Romford U15s welcomed Basildon U15s to Crow Lane for their latest fixture and although Romford were a few players down, they were ready for a tough test against Basildon.

A fired up Romford started quickly and were straight on the attack and although Romford had a lot of possession, it was Basildon who crossed the whitewash first for an unconverted try. However this spurred Romford on and in the next phase of possession Michael Courtney danced, weaved and dummied his way through the defence to score a fine unconverted try to level the score. Romford were quickly on the attack again and Michael Sultana’s speed saw him blast through Basildon’s defence to score a second try under the posts that Shaun Kerr converted. Romford were finding holes all over the park now. They were forcing Basildon to make costly errors, James Mimms put his head down and rumbled through the defensive line to score Romford’s third consecutive try and Shaun Kerr’s second conversion of the game. Basildon did manage to gain some possession and managed to score again in the corner but straight from Shaun Kerr’s resulting restart an awkward bounce saw Luke Metcalf gather the ball and weave through defenders to score the final try of the half.

HT: RGP 24-12 Basildon

Romford were clearly buoyed by their excellent first half performance and decided that there was still more to come, they were winning at the scrum and contesting every ruck and it wasn’t long before Tom O’Meara scored a great try from a fine passing move involving most of the team. Ryan Pooley then decided it was time for him to get in on the act and his speed was just too much for the Basildon defence to handle as he touched down for a try, which Shaun Kerr converted. Basildon did not give up though and they managed to get back on the scoreboard with the next try. Romford were still applying pressure though and were really enjoying themselves, a set move from the scrum saw the ball pass along the line of backs until Harry Runham saw a gap to sprint through and gingerly touched down for a fine score. Romford’s last two tries of the day came from Captain Luke Metcalf, making the most of his speed, dummying the opposition and completing his hat trick of tries, also allowing Shaun Kerr to score a fourth conversion of the day. Although Basildon would score the final try just before the whistle went, it was an impressive performance and a comprehensive victory by the Romford boys. Well done U15s!
