Romford run aground at Chelmsford

Chelsmford 14 v 12 Romford

Romford travelled to a very wet and windy Chelmsford for their last league game of the season - with Chelmsford sitting top of the League unbeaten Romford knew they would have to play at the top of the game - from the outset the Chelmsford game plan was evident as they used their big Physical forwards to punch holes in the Romford defence - Chelmsford from the kick off worked their way upfield with some great rucking and mauling and it wasnt long before their powerful forwards dived over the line to take an early lead ( conv scored ) Romford were struggling to get a foot hold in the game as Chelmsford kept the ball for long periods but the Romford defence started to tighten up and get back into the game - the rest of the 1st half was spent mostly in midfield as both sides tried to run the ball as best they could in awful conditions.
The 2nd half started with Romford played up the hill and into the wind and rain but to their credit the boys threw eveything at Chelmsford but struggled to get out of their half as handling became more difficult - Chelmsford again laid siege on the Romford line for 10 minutes but were constantly pushed back each time until a penalty 5 mtrs out saw the home sides No8 power through under the posts ( conv scored ) to take a 14-0 lead half way through the 2nd period
To Romfords credit they never let their heads drop and after working the way upfield through some good forward and back work they were awarded a scrum on Chelmsford 22 and from the base of the scrum No 8 Billy Davison handed off 3 would be defenders to score in the corner ( conv missed ) - this seemed to galvanise Romfords belief and they threw the kictchen sink at the home side and with time running out ran the ball from inside their own 22 and saw winger Richard Avbunudge take the ball standing still before setting off and running through the entire Chelmsford covering defence to run nearly the length of the pitch to score under the posts ( conv Hormans ) which was then the last play of the day and for Romford to be on the wrong end of a defeat 14-12
It was a credit to both sides that due to the conditions both sides tried to play a s much running rugby as possible and we wish our Chelmsford friends well in their last league game
