A cloudy morning welcomed the U14s to Stanford in their search for a 2016 win and Romford came well prepared having trained well during the preceding week.
Romford were determined to secure a win and they started brightly. A strong scrum from the Romford boys and some slick passing moves allowed Luke Metcalf to dummy the Stanford defender and race through on the blind side. A fantastic conversion from Sam Slatford followed and Romford were on the scoreboard. Romford kept plugging away and were desperately unlucky not to score a further two trys having spent most of the half camped in the oppositions end, unfortunately Stanford did manage to get a score before the break but Romford continued to battle on.
Half time: Stanford 5-7 RGP
The start of the second half tested Romford’s resolve, Stanford scored two trys in quick succession but Romford’s heads didn’t drop. There were some great performances from the boys, the forwards got their heads down, James Mimms, Connor Hardy and Ryan Page bursting through Stanford’s defence and getting stuck in and the backs, notably Luke Metcalf, Michael Courtney and Sam Slatford, attacking the line with some great passing moves. Romford were eventually rewarded with a try from Sam Slatford and the score could have been so different if Sam Slatford’s pass to Torez Poluis later in the game had not be judged to be forward. A positive effort from the boys though – as the entire teams performance was something to be proud of.
